Status: Approved by CEO and Implemented

Purpose

This SOP outlines the process to ensure the safe and efficient evacuation of all staff, students, and visitors during a fire or emergency requiring evacuation.

Scope

Applies to all instructors during instructional hours or whenever responsible for students within the facility.

Definitions

  • Assembly Area: Safe location at least 50 feet from the building
  • Evacuation Sweep: Check to ensure all individuals have exited
  • Attendance Sheet: Used for roll call during evacuation
  • First Aid Kit: Supplies for initial injury response

Responsibilities

  • Instructors: Lead evacuation, account for students, perform sweep, report missing individuals
  • Campus Manager / Program Manager: Ensure campus-wide compliance
  • Students: Follow instructions and remain in assembly area

Procedure

1. Initial Response

  • Alert occupants and call emergency services (911)
  • Grab attendance sheet and first aid kit if available

2. Evacuation Instructions

  • Direct students to evacuate calmly to assembly area
  • Provide clear and calm instructions

3. Area Sweep and Exit

  • Check classroom/clinic to ensure all have exited
  • Check doors for heat before opening
  • Stay low if smoke is present
  • Close doors behind you
  • Do not use elevators

4. Fire Extinguisher Use (If Safe)

  • Only attempt if fire is small and contained
  • Ensure emergency services are already contacted
  • Only proceed if trained and safe to do so

5. Assembly and Roll Call

  • Move to assembly area (50+ feet away)
  • Conduct roll call using attendance sheet
  • Report missing individuals immediately

6. Medical Response

  • Provide first aid if needed
  • Prioritize safety and critical injuries
  • Follow instructions from emergency responders

7. Post-Evacuation

  • Do not re-enter building until cleared
  • Report to Campus Manager or Program Manager
  • Complete incident documentation if required

Completion Criteria

  • All occupants safely evacuated
  • Roll call completed and verified
  • Emergency responders engaged
  • Incident reported and documented
