Purpose
Defines the protocol for responding to needle stick injuries to minimize health risks and ensure proper documentation and compliance.
Scope
Applies to students involved in clinical, externship, or lab-related needle stick incidents.
Trigger
- Student experiences a needle stick injury during clinical or lab activities
Process Overview
1. Immediate Response
- Wash affected area with soap and water for at least 5 minutes
- Notify instructor or supervisor immediately
- Follow extern site protocols if applicable
- Notify school administration
2. Medical Evaluation
- Seek post-exposure medical care
- Optional testing for HIV, HBV, and HCV
- Evaluation provided at no cost if accepted
3. Incident Reporting
- Complete Post-Exposure Incident Report
- Include incident details and source patient (if known)
- Indicate acceptance or refusal of medical evaluation
4. Follow-Up and Documentation
- Healthcare provider submits written evaluation within 15 days
- Store medical and incident records in HubSpot
- Maintain documentation for compliance and auditing
