Texas Registered Dental Assistant X-Ray Certification Process

A Summary of the Registered Dental Assistant X-Ray Certification to get your state license.



  1. Take your RDA Radiology Exam through the UTHSCSA. 
  2. Visit https://tsbde.texas.gov.
  3. Click on "Licensing" select "Dental Assistants" and then "New Certificates."
  4. Choose "Registered Dental Assistant X-Ray Certification."
  5. Scroll down to find the "Online Application Instructions" and follow these steps:
    • Register for a secure online account using a personal email address.
    • You will receive a temporary password via email from donotreply@hpc.state.tx.us.
    • Log in using the temporary password and set a permanent password.
    • From the Quick Start Menu, select "Start a New Application" and choose "Texas State Board of Dental Examiners."
    • Select "Initial Dental Assistant by Exam" on the left side of the page.
    • Complete the application and submit the required fees using a debit or credit card (MasterCard, Visa, Discover, or American Express).
    • You will receive email summaries of your application and payment and instructions for the fingerprinting process.
    • NOTE THAT YOU MUST ALSO MAIL IN THE REQUIRED DOCUMENTS LISTED BELOW TO COMPLETE YOUR APPLICATION:
  6. Prepare the following documents:
    • Copy of your Online Application Summary and Payment Summary Receipt.
    • A 2x2 passport photo with your head facing the camera directly, on a plain white or off-white background.
    • Copy of your driver's license, naturalization papers, and/or passport.
    • Copy of your social security card.
    • Copy of your current Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR certification.
    • Copy of your high school diploma or GED.
    • Proof of successful completion of a TSBDE-approved dental assistant registration course (UTHSCSA Certificate).
    • IF THE RDA COURSE/EXAM WAS TAKEN OVER A YEAR AGO, YOU'LL NEED TO PASS THE TEXAS JURISPRUDENCE ASSESSMENT OR PROVIDE A COPY OF YOUR CURRENT DANB CDA CARD.
    • Copy of your receipt from IdentoGO for fingerprinting.
  7. Ensure you also include the National Practitioner Data Bank (NPDB) Self-Query Report in its original sealed envelope.
  8. Provide proof of completion of the Health and Human Services (HHS) Human Trafficking Course.
  9. Make copies of all the documents you're sending and send the originals by FedEx.
    • Make sure to keep a copy of the receipt with the tracking number.
  10. If you cannot apply online, download the RDA application and have it notarized before submitting it to TSBDE with the required supporting documents.
  11. Once your application is received, TSBDE staff will email instructions for scheduling a fingerprint session with IdentoGO.
