What is the difference between an RDA, CDA, and a Qualified Dental Assistant?

A general overview of dental assistant roles

A Dental Assistant can be classified into three categories: Qualified Dental Assistant (QDA), Registered Dental Assistant (RDA), and Certified Dental Assistant (CDA).

  1. A Qualified Dental Assistant (QDA) has received either on-the-job training or education through a dental assisting school, but there is no specific credential for this level of training.

  2. A Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) has completed the state-level registration process with the SBDE and has received a Dental Assistant Registration Certificate. They may use the title "Registered Dental Assistant" or "RDA".

  3. A Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) has met the education and experience requirements set by the Dental Assistant National Board (DANB). They have passed the DANB Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) Examination, which includes components such as Radiation Health and Safety, Infection Control, and General Chairside. In addition, they must be currently CPR-certified and maintain their credentials by meeting DANB requirements. They may use the title "Certified Dental Assistant" or "CDA". Please note that our courses do not offer CDA certification.
